Configuration and autoscaling

Inspect application behavior from ConfigMaps and Secrets to HPA, VPA and admission resources.

Configuration resources

Configuration includes dedicated pages for ConfigMaps, Secrets, HPA, VPA, PodDisruptionBudgets, PriorityClasses, RuntimeClasses, MutatingWebhooks and ValidatingWebhooks.

  • View ConfigMap/Secret content with the appropriate permission and use supported editing tools.
  • Manage Deployment resource requests/limits and horizontal/vertical autoscaling settings.
  • Inspect disruption budgets, scheduling priorities and runtime classes.
  • Review admission webhook definitions with administrator access.

Change an application setting

  1. Identify the ConfigMap or Secret referenced by the workload.
  2. Open the resource in the correct namespace and edit only the required fields.
  3. Check whether the application needs a restart based on how it reads configuration.
  4. Verify the change through new Pod logs and resource state.

Autoscaling and sensitive resources

HPA needs appropriate metrics; VPA needs its controller and CRDs installed in the cluster. Targets and operating modes can affect resource consumption or cause Pods to be recreated.

Expose Secret values only to people who need them. Admission webhook changes can affect the creation of many resources, so these controls require system administrator permissions.
